The council's economic development board, Dantia, applied to Destination NSW earlier this year in a bid to host the event in March at Lake Macquarie Airport.
The airport is back up and running after it was sold to a consortium last year, including Matt Hall Racing.
However, Dantia is yet to secure funding from the state government. If the board's bid is successful, it hopes to stage the event in October next year.
