Dressed in a beige hoodie, grey tracksuit pants and red running shoes, the 21-year-old arrived in Australia on Sunday to a flock of 100 or so screaming fans.

Bieber dutifully posed for photos and gave high fives, but was unimpressed with his reception at Melbourne airport and left feeling harassed.

Just hours after his arrival, the What Do You Mean singer made an impassioned plea to his fans reminding him that he is a human "just like you" and to "please just respect me".

"The way you ask or approach me when you want a photo with me is going to determine if I take a photo or not," the Canadian pop star said in a series of videos posted to Snapchat.

"If I'm walking somewhere or arriving somewhere and you guys are asking me to take a photo, if I don't respond, if I continue to keep walking, the likelihood is that I probably don't want to take a photo at that moment."

In the videos, filmed while driving through Melbourne's streets and posted at 2pm on Sunday, Bieber adds: "If you start screaming louder that's not going to make me take a photo more.

"I want to enjoy the moment like you're enjoying the moment but I can't enjoy it if I'm not feeling there's any respect given to me that moment," the singer continued.

"Usually the chances are I'll take a photo but if perhaps I don't, or I'm not in the mood to take a photo that moment, please just respect me and just treat me the way you want to be treated."

The singer, who is in Australia for a series of concerts and to promote his new single, reminded fans to look up from their phones.

"Honestly I'd rather stand there and talk to you for five minutes and not take any photos... just have that moment without the chaos," he said.

"It's like why did you travel to see me in the first place, was it really to see me or was it to get that moment of you seeing me so you could tell people about it?

"Just remember I'm not unattainable, unreachable, I'm just like you and I communicate just like you, so next time remember."

Prior to posting the videos, Bieber had a burger at Nandos, posed for more photos with fans and spent time in the sun on the beach in St Kilda.

Following his rant, the pop star, who flies to Sydney on Monday night, apparently had a change of heart.

"Loving Australia. I've missed this place," Bieber tweeted on Sunday afternoon, adding: "Thanks for the welcome."
