The hazard reduction is planned to start on Monday, October 12, for 47 of the 160 hectares of bushland in the reserve.
Lake Macquarie City Council and Fire and Rescue NSW propose to conduct the hazard reduction burn at Green Point over two days, depending on weather conditions.
The council's bushland management officer, Craig Holland, said the temperature and wind needed to be low enough and the humidity high enough for the burn to go ahead.
"Autumn and spring are usually the best seasons for conducting bushfire reduction burns because the moisture content of the fuel is just right, the temperature and humidity are usually suitable and it's timely just before the summer bushfire season," Mr Holland said.
"When it goes ahead, we advise people who live within the Green Point area to stay inside, keep doors and windows closed, pull the washing in and ensure pets have a sheltered area to reduce risk from flying embers and smoke," he said.
Green Point Reserve will be closed for one week following the burn for safety reasons and to allow effective regeneration.
Mr Holland said one of the best ways to reduce the risk of fire was to allow regular, controlled fires to burn the build-up of fuel in bushland.
"Dense fuel increases bushfire intensity and is more difficult to control - increasing risks to animals, people and property," he said.
Mr Holland said they had conducted more burns this year compared to the past four years combined.
