In 2000, Craig Hamilton was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
He had just started a full-time radio career and was about to be a broadcaster at the Sydney Olympics when he had a psychotic episode.
Since his recovery, he has written two books, Broken Open and A Better Life, and become a beyondblue ambassador.
His message is be proactive with your mental health.
Mr Hamilton said too many people wait until they were stressed, exhausted or depressed before taking action to improve their mental health.
He said some take action then but many more assume they were powerless to change and continued to suffer silently as he did.
"The more aware you are of your mood, sleep patterns, stress levels, work load and self talk the better your mental health will be," Mr Hamilton said.
"We need to take responsibility for our own mental health and the choices we make.
"Consciously taking time out for yourself, exercising, meditating and getting enough sleep all helps to create an environment where stress doesn't overload you."
He will give a free public seminar on Creating Better Mental Health on October 14 from 6pm at Charlestown Library.
Mr Hamilton will speak about his experience of depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder.
