The program encourages people to read, talk, sing and rhyme with children so they will be better prepared to learn when they start school.
Children all over Lake Macquarie have been reading to a special egg, which will "hatch" when children have been reading, talking and sharing stories with it.
If children and families continue to nurture the reading egg throughout October, the egg will hatch at the council's Children's Week Family Fun Picnic Day at Awaba House on Sunday, October 25.
The picnic day will run from 10am to 1pm, and feature a story walk with children's author Susan Whelan, free sausage sizzle, mask and library bag-making workshops, a visit from NSW Police and the Rural Fire Service, and other fun family-friendly activities.
Grandparents are encouraged to attend the event, which is happening on NSW Grandparents Day.
Lake Mac Libraries will also host special story times throughout October where children will have the opportunity to read to the egg and hear Susan Whelan share her book, Don't Think About Purple Elephants.
