Come early for family fun and stay late for the three live bands plus food and wine available for purchase. Mambo: 3Ø1 years of shelf-indulgence is on at NAG from November 28, to January 24, 2016. Our country's most irreverent and outspoken brand has turned 31 and this exhibition celebrates the iconic clothing label with the largest collection of Mambo works ever assembled.
The exhibition will inherently connect with Newcastle and is one that interests me personally having grown up around iconic Mambo imagery and surf culture. Most Australians of a certain age have fond memories of Mambo artworks and at one time or another have owned a Mambo T-shirt so for us the exhibition will certainly be nostalgic.
Known for being loud, unorthodox and quirky, Mambo has been the incubator for many renowned artists - including Reg Mombassa, who has created a new work specifically for this exhibition, Mechangaroo with pencil (2015), which depicts iconic Newcastle images such as Nobbys lighthouse and coal ships in the harbour.
