Birighitti was the hero on the day, pulling off a series of magnificent saves in the second half to keep Newcastle’s goal intact.

The Jets lacked any sort of threat in attack.

Adelaide played out from the back with ease and were rarely challenged in possession.

The Jets' best moments came from set pieces; Milos Trifunovic blew a sharp chance shortly before half time when he was found unmarked at the far post by Enver Alivodic.

With time to take a touch or square the ball to a teammate, the Serb went for the spectacular and missed the ball in comical fashion.

After the break it was Adelaide who were doing all the running. 

Jimmy Jeggo's shot was palmed around the post by Birighitti, and he was again denied when a long range drive was tipped over the bar.

Birighitti managed to flick the point-blank shot over the crossbar with his left hand as he looked to dive to his right.

Captain Nigel Boogard limped off with an ankle injury late on but the defence stood firm. 

After a strong season start, the Jets have only one win in their last four games and could drop out of the top six with a loss to ladder-leaders Brisbane Roar at Hunter Stadium this Saturday.
