Newcastle Roller Derby League will host its final bout of the year on Saturday, December 5, at Newcastle Showgrounds Exhibition Centre in Broadmeadow.
The main match of the double-header event will see Newcastle face off against sister league South Side Derby Dolls in a contest that has been dubbed ‘Purple Reign’, after each team’s purple uniforms.
Sparks are sure to fly between the two teams, which went head-to-head in the 5x5 Roller Derby Championship earlier this year.
Newcastle lost to South Side, so this time the local girls hope to take their friendly rivals down.
Junior skaters from Newcastle Junior Roller Derby will open the event in their first home game.
Playing to a slightly modified ruleset, junior roller derby has exploded in popularity over the last year in Australia.
Newcastle’s juniors have had the opportunity to travel as far as Adelaide, and most recently Port Macquarie to play in the Smackdown Reloaded tournament.
Saturday’s event will also feature half-time entertainment by Newcastle Pro Wrestling, who have just finished the last of their popular live shows for the year.
Tickets to the event can be bought from newcastlerollerderby.org.au, or at the door.
Doors will open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start.
