Earlier this year, year 7 student Danyon Blackeby parted with his long hair he had been growing for several years to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Danyon’s motivation for participating in the World’s Greatest Shave was his grandfather, who is battling blood cancer.
He said shaving off his hair was one way he could support his grandfather.
“I wanted to raise money to help the Leukaemia Foundation do further research into these diseases,” Danyon said.
He raised more than $2600 for the peak body, which will fund research and help provide services to people with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood-related cancers.
Danyon’s bravery inspired his classmate, Issac Quinn to do the same.
Issac raised close to $1000 during his campaign.
The dynamic duo have now put the challenge to their peers and teachers to be brave and shave to raise money for a worthy cause.
Head of Middle School, Tammy Perrim said the boys had been a real encouragement to all.
“Students at this age have a tendency to become very inward-looking,” Mrs Perrim said.
“While this is a natural part of the maturation process, it’s also very important that they also look outside of themselves regularly.
“In fact, it’s good for all of us.”
Danyon and Issac are just two examples of how the school’s students strive to put others before themselves.
Earlier this year, six year 4 students, each accompanied by a parent, spent their school holidays serving the poor and marginalised in the Philippines.
Closer to home, students from kindergarten to year 12 have been collecting donations daily to help the school’s parents association put together Christmas hampers for local families in need.
“It’s always wonderful to see our school community rally together with the sole purpose of serving others,” College Principal Mrs Skuthorpe said.
