Mr Piper is chair of the Lake Macquarie Lead Community Reference Group, which hosted a community information night for about 60 people on Tuesday at Boolaroo Public School.
He told attendees while he supported the notion of a future fund, his priority was securing a repository nearby for contaminated soil.
“I would have liked that last year sometime,” Mr Piper said after the meeting. “I don’t see this as being difficult to achieve.”
Mr Piper said visiting the site of the Bunker Hill mine in Idaho had “changed my mind about the complexity” of dealing with the legacy of pollution and said simple, practical solutions were overdue. “Our system is over complicating it.”
Boolaroo Action Group spokesperson Jim Sullivan said Mr Piper was now “on the same page” as the group.
