The world-renowned annual surfing festival rolls into Newcastle each February, bringing with it some of the top surfers in the country and the world to battle it out across a host of world qualifying series events.
This year world top-10 surfers Julian Wilson and Sally Fitzgibbons will head a bumper field of 347 entrants for the men’s and women’s pro events.
The Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Wildcard trials were held at Birubi Point last Sunday.
Top seed wildcard Jacob Wilcox, of Margaret River, Western Australia, stormed through two rounds and a final to earn himself a spot in the round of 96 of the Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Pro.
There are plenty of events on the Surfest 2016 circuit, so get down to one of the city’s great beaches throughout the month for some thrilling surf action.

February 18 to 19: Wandiyali Indigenous Classic, Merewether Beach
February 20 to 21: nib Pro Junior - WSL 1000 Men's and Women's, Merewether Beach; Sanbah Cadet Cup, South Bar Beach; Dalton Lawyers Cadet Girls, South Bar Beach.
February 22 to 28: Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Pro - Men's WSL 6000, Merewether Beach; Taggart Women's Pro - Women's WSL 6000, Merewether Beach.
February 25 to 26: Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota High School Teams Challenge, South Bar Beach.
February 26: Surfaid Cup, Dixon Park Beach.
February 28: Port of Newcastle Stars of the Future, Merewether Beach.
