With eight years of training, Steph, 15, has a lot to show for her efforts.
Last weekend she contested the state junior championships, where she qualified for the national championships in Perth next month.
She won gold in both of her events – shot put and discus.
Steph has a successful history at nationals.
In 2013 she became a two-time Australian champion when she won gold in the shot put and discus.
Steph also has a distinguished record at state level.
In October the Callaghan College student competed at the NSW Combined High Schools Athletics Championships and smashed the state shot put record by 93 centimetres and won gold in discus by six metres.
But it was Steph’s performance at a local level that caught selectors’ eyes to place her in the running for the award.
At the zone athletics carnival in December she broke records in both events.
Last month Steph competed in the Hunter Track Classic at Glendale, where she was the youngest competitor in her field.
She scored a competition personal best, hurtling a four-kilogram shot put 12.65 metres, qualifying her for the open age nationals in April. However, she will be taking time off with an ankle injury.
