Here in Lake Macquarie we are fortunate to have 12 shared pathways which take in a variety of landscapes throughout the area, showcasing coastal vistas to bushland and pastoral surrounds.
The Fernleigh Track and Red Bluff Boardwalk are two of our well-known 'green route' networks and connect people with the area’s stunning natural landscape. There is also the Pelican to Swansea route providing a coastal trip, and the rural pathway extending from Barnsley to Holmesville - just to name a few.
A number of our shared pathways also link to local cafes, shopping areas and parks, providing a wonderful alternative to driving or taking public transport. These shared pathways were designed to provide a safe environment for both children and adults to use, while also encouraging healthy recreational activity.
T is important to remember that the paths are used by people from across our community, and at any time of day there is likely to be families, young children, older people, those living with a disability and pets on leads also enjoying the pathways. There are a number of ways we can ensure that we do not cause a risk to others when enjoying the paths such as ringing the bell on your bike, or politely warning walkers you are approaching; Walk and ride on the left side of the path except when overtaking; Consider others who are using the path; Ride at a safe speed and give way to pedestrians - shared paths are not racetracks.
