Andrew Constance said on Tuesday that regional areas would receive the data, which covers vehicle movements that vary from the timetable.
Train progress would be updated every 30 seconds while coach services would be updated every few minutes.
“For the first time regional customers will have access to the same information about their services as our metropolitan customers, and as Future Transport progresses, there will be more improvements on the horizon for regional customers,” Mr Constance said.
The regional data will cover the Hunter train line.
Some Hunter bus services are already tracked live.
“There have been over three million downloads of real-time data transport apps since they became available and 90 million requests for timetable data each month,” Mr Constance said.
“Including regional data on the transport apps demonstrates the NSW Government’s commitment to improving public transport services right across NSW.”
Apps using the data include TripView, NextThere, Arrivo Sydney, Triptastic, Metarove, abil.io, Moovit and Transit App.
