Newcastle Region Library has launched 5000 Stars to End Violence, a colourful installation of stars woven from tear ribbon by volunteers in the name of peace.

The stunning display in the foyer of the library is part of international arts project One Million Stars to End Violence, which began in 2012 following the brutal rape and murder of Jill Meagher.
Together with One Million Stars project founder Maryann Talia Pau on Friday, I launched the 5000 stars woven for the Newcastle project ahead of International Women's Day this week.
The installation aims to raise awareness of violence against women, bullying and racism. Each star symbolises light, courage and hope to end all forms of violence in our community. Our aim in Newcastle and the Hunter is to create 10,000 stars by March next year in support of the initiative.
Free weave workshops will be held at Timeless Textiles every Thursday from 10.30-12.30pm and workshops will be at the library throughout March.
