As many in our community would be aware earlier this month council made the difficult decision to close Burdekin Park as a matter of public safety.

The large population of little red flying foxes currently in residence has placed significant pressure on the trees and many large branches are falling across the park on a daily basis.
While not a protected species like their grey-headed cousins, the little reds proximity to the maternal camp means they are in essence protected while they reside in the park.
The little reds are highly nomadic and we do expect they will move on when their local food source runs out. Until such time as the park is deemed safe, it will remain closed. Council has engaged an arborist to undertake a report into the health and safety of the trees.
Council will continue to work in cooperation with the state and federal governments to manage the colony within the restraints of legislation.
Sport awards
It was a great pleasure to attend the Singleton Sports Star Awards last Monday night. Our rich sporting history continues to grow with outstanding achievements recognised in rugby league, swimming, cricket, rugby union, dirt track racing and clay target shooting. A big congratulations to all the finalists and winners in this year’s awards.
Planning forum
Last Thursday Council hosted a development and planning forum to discuss service delivery with local stakeholders. It was a great opportunity for developers and builders to raise issues or concerns they had with development applications and the building certification process. Over the next week, Council staff will detail an action plan to improve service delivery in this area and circulate it to stakeholders for their comment.
New GM
Finally, last week we welcomed Council’s new General Manager Jason Linnane. Jason has worked in local government for more than 25 years having previously held roles at Dubbol, Newcastle and, most recently, Port Stephens councils. On behalf of Council and staff I’d like to formally welcome Jason.
