Mini motorcycle riders from across Australia are expected to attend the two-day championship, including Mark Stevens from the Gold Coast.
“It’s probably the coolest sport you’ve never heard of,” Stevens, aged 51, said.
“It’s definitely by far the cheaper moto sport you can get in to and they’re still really fast.
“What’s good about them [motorcycles] is they’re compact so you don’t hurt yourself too much when you come off.
“There’s too many rules and regulations in big bikes, the fees are high and if you come off, you really hurt yourself. You don’t have all that with the minis.”
Spectators are welcome to watch the action on April 22 and 23. Entry is free.
Parents are encouraged to head along to the raceway with their children. Stevens said there would be plenty to keep adults and children alike entertained. Due to the size of the bikes, riders are close to the ground and more often than not touch the track when going around corners.
“There’s going to be 15 to 20 elite GP bikes,” he said. “These bikes do well over 130 kilometres an hour.”
Stevens said it was crucial more people attended such events and become involved in the sport as it has seen a drop in numbers in recent years.
Due to strict racing laws in NSW, juniors will not race on the weekend. They will however show off their skills on the practice circuit, including Benny Baker, 11, from Wyong.
Benny started out on the dirt bikes and moved to mini motorcycles “a few months ago” the 11-year-old’s father, Dan Baker, said.
“It was a natural progression,” Baker said. “He’s now just as quick or quicker than the adults.”
GP50, GP40 and CAG racing classes will be contested on the weekend.
There will be practice and qualifying events on Friday and racing all Saturday. The first race on Saturday will be the GP50s, kicking off at 11am.
Mount Sugarloaf Raceway is located at 5 Cameron Park Drive, Cameron Park.
