Lake Macquarie Mayor Jodie Harrison performed a citizenship ceremony at the Speers Point council chambers on the morning of April 27 which saw 30 people originally from 15 countries become Australian residents.
“Guiding new citizens through the final step on their migrant journey is a great honour for me as mayor,” Cr Harrison said.
“For many, becoming an Australian citizen will be one of the most memorable moments of their life and seeing the joy on people’s faces as they recite the pledge to Australia is a truly touching moment to share in.
“It is truly an honour to be able to stand alongside loved ones and family members and watch as a resident recites the citizenship pledge and takes the final steps on their migrant journey.
“As mayor, I would like to welcome each and every one of our new Australian citizens to Lake Macquarie.
“I’m sure we will all benefit from the unique contributions they will make to our city.”
The ceremony saw Jilu Jose, originally from India, Sittimont Kanjanabootra from Thailand and Gregor Aitken from the United Kingdom become Australia residents.
The new group also included residents originally from countries such as Brazil, Russia, Zimbabwe and Nepal.
