Council’s tourism marketing co-ordinator, Bianca Gilmore, said the Great Lake Challenge was a promotion designed to highlight more than the natural wonders of Lake Macquarie.
The promotion also puts the spotlight on the many amazing accommodation options, food and beverage providers, attractions and activity operators that help sustain the city’s economy, she said.
“To successfully complete the Challenge, entrants must visit eight participating operators and have their entry flyer stamped at each,” Ms Gilmore said.
“The more operators that a resident visits, the more chances they’ll have to win the grand prize of a weekend away for four people at Rafferty’s Resort, or one of 26 exciting runner-up prizes.”
Prizes include meal vouchers for the Boatshed Bar + Gallery at Belmont 16s, Café Macquarie, Caves Beachside Hotel, Pelican RSL, Q&Co Café, Toronthai Restaurant and Salty Dog Bistro at the Lake Macquarie Yacht Club, passes for Charlestown Golf Club, Richmond Vale Railway Museum, Nova Cruises, and Jet Buzz, vouchers from Lake Mac Kayak and Bike Hire, and Healing Haven Markets, a night at the Macquarie Inn, cash and more.
Lake Macquarie residents received a Great Lake Challenge entry form with their April rates notice. Entry forms are also available at visitlakemac.com.au/the-great-lake-challenge or from participating operators.
Completed entries must be received by July 26, and prizes will be drawn on August 1.
The Great Lake Challenge is part of a wider initiative by Lake Macquarie Tourism to encourage people to rediscover the lake.
A new interactive ‘game’ called Create Your Lake Break has also been developed and is available on the Visit Lake Macquarie website.
Among the local destinations it features is Toronto.
“The largest town on the western side of the lake, Toronto features a vibrant sailing scene, and the yacht club and marina are both attractions,” the website says.
“Other highlights include modern shopping, cafes and restaurants and an 18-hole golf course.”
