In one of the more compelling bounty-hunting stories we've seen, Facebook has awarded a 10-year-old Finnish boy $US10,000 ($13,326) for hacking into Instagram, which the social media giant owns.
It's not uncommon for technology companies to give bounties to hackers who point out security flaws so they can fix them. It's less common for those helpful hackers to not yet have hit puberty.
The whiz kid from Helsinki, called Jani, is even too young to open his own Facebook account, according to the site's terms of service.
Jani told Finnish media outlet Iltalehti he discovered the bug when he found he could mess with code on Instagram's servers, allowing him to delete text written by other users on the photo-sharing site.
He notified Instagram of the flaw via email, and a couple of days later they told him it was fixed. They gave him a $US10,000 reward to say thank you.
The bug was patched in February and Jani received his reward in late March, Forbes reports.
Jani, who despite his young age codes games in his spare time, told Iltalehti he could have deleted Justin Bieber's comments on Instagram if he'd wanted to.
He and his twin brother have found bugs in websites before, but not been paid, Jani's father said.
Jani plans to buy a new bike and a football with part of the money. When he grows up he wants to be a security expert, the news site reports.
Facebook's bug bounty programme paid out $US936,000 ($1.25 million) to 210 researchers last year.
Previously the youngest ever recipient of a bug bounty under the program was 13 years old.
Facebook bought Instagram for $US1 billion in 2012.
