It was an honour to accept a United Nations flag last week from the UN's training arm to confirm Newcastle as a UN City and host of the first International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Australasia and the Pacific region.

The centre will draw on the University of Newcastle's School of Architecture and Built Environment's strengths in disaster preparedness and sustainable development to help governments and communities mitigate natural disasters and social and industrial upheaval.
The City of Newcastle joins Atlanta, Geneva and Shanghai in hosting a UNITAR training centre for future leaders. To be mentioned among them is a testament to the strength of our collaboration with the community, educational institutions and industry and also the alignment of our city's goals with those of the United Nations'.
"Newcastle is receiving today the United Nations flag as a testament to its commitment to the future of our planet," UNITAR representative Alexander Mejia told an audience at a ceremony in Civic Park.
The partnership between the University, The United Nations and the City of Newcastle will see Newcastle play an increasingly important role in the Pacific region.
We will now help build capacity to mitigate the risk of disaster and social and industrial change after proving our own resilience more than once.
