From operations to continued therapy appointments, the path to what will be a normal childhood for Olivia will be long and winding.
"I worry a lot about the unknown," Mrs Veljanovski said.
This Sunday, October 21, the public is invited to take part in the Hunter Region Buddy Walk.
In its fifth year, the walk - organised by Down Syndrome NSW - encourages people to support and accept the abilities and needs of people with Down syndrome in the community.
This year's walk will be the first of many for the Veljanovskis.
"For us it is really about the sense of community and being welcomed into a large supportive family in a way that I never expected," Mrs Veljanovski said.
■ The Buddy Walk will start at Carriageway Shed, Newcastle Foreshore, from 9.45am. For more information, phone 0413 515 274.
