The exhibition features memorabilia, keepsakes and photographs of major events during the past four decades.
It also includes original uniforms, historic videos of the helicopters in action, and shows how the service works as part of the state’s emergency care chain.
There’s even a ride-on chopper and colouring in activities for children.
Since 1975 more than 30,000 missions have been undertaken by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
The concept for the Service, and its infancy of operations, came from the Surf Life Saving Association, which provides voluntary, free of charge protection on Australian beaches.
The exhibition is now open until from Wednesday to Sunday, between 10am and 5pm until July 17 at the Newcastle Museum.
Entry is free.
