I am pleased that so many people in our community continue to recognise the importance of Australia’s unique cultural heritage and promote the value of reconciliation during NAIDOC Week. This year’s theme Songlines: The living narrative of our nation, highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ strong spiritual and cultural connection to land and sea through songs, art, dance and ceremony.

It was great to see so many Indigenous and non-Indigenous members of our community come together and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at Council’s special flag-raising and traditional smoking ceremony on Tuesday.
NAIDOC Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make in their chosen fields, and with events happening all over the city to suit all ages, I encourage everyone in our community to join in this national celebration. This Saturday, Council rangers are also hosting a free microchipping day for Lake Macquarie residents at PETstock Warners Bay. Microchipping your dog or cat is one of the most important things you can do for your pet. Council understands the importance of pets to our community, and this is a great free service to help Lake Macquarie residents keep track of their pets as well as comply with the law by microchipping their pet. For all the details, check out Council’s Facebook page.
