The Bots in the Books program, funded through a Port Waratah community grant, provides young people interested in technology-based careers with basic skills in science, technology, engineering and maths.
Last week around 15 students learned about electricity and how to solder and build circuits.
On the last day of the course at Wallsend Library, students were taught coding that allowed them to control a micro-controller to drive lights and motors. To finish off, they applied their skills to make a robotic arm function.
Our collaboration with Hunter TAFE supports Newcastle City Council's mission to become a smart, liveable and sustainable city with a culture that supports and encourages innovation and creativity at all levels.
The TAFE program provides participants with a chance to experience what it's like to be involved in a technical industry. In the Hunter these include unmanned aerial vehicles, water-borne drones, 3D printing, circuit board prototyping, electric vehicles, autonomous machines, robotics and some amazing examples of process control and automated systems.
The program will also be held next school holidays.
