Three beach access points destroyed by the recent east coast low will be reinforced by around 200 large sandbags, each weighing around 1.5 tonnes once filled.
Sandbags laid long ago protected the surf club as massive north-east swells generated by the June storm eroded sand dunes, undermined beach access paths and threatened the carpark near the Lexie's on the Beach café.
It's important we take this temporary measure to make the beach safe again and shore up Stockton against any further damage. Meanwhile, we are investigating the construction of an underground rock seawall and the extension of the Bathers Way shared pathway to Stockton beach.
Council officers are currently looking into the first stage - a 165m stretch from the surf lifesaving club in the north to Lexie’s Café.
