A new ramp will be built to improve access to the Depression-era bathers pavilion while the sea wall between Merewether Surf House and the surf club will be rebuilt to preserve beachside infrastructure for future generations. Maintenance of the city's coastal facilities is a constant. Stabilising cliffs and sea walls and maintaining tired structures like the pavilion are just as important as providing new attractions and updates, like Bathers Way and park upgrades. The 81-year-old pavilion will get new roofing, gutters and downpipes, and repairs will be made to masonry, brickwork, windows and railings. Plumbing, carpentry and electrical work will also be carried out before the finishing touches are added later in the year.

The seawall between Merewether Surf Club ramp and the shade structure below Merewether Surf House is also being reinforced after signs of failure appeared. The work includes partial demolition of the existing structure, construction of a new stepped wall and rebuilding the pathway to provide better amenity and access and improved safety. During the work the baths will be fully functional with amenity sheds providing toilets, change rooms, showers and a temporary space for lifeguards. Newcastle Ocean Baths is currently closed for annual sand removal work, which is expected to be finished by Monday 22 August.
