In fact, when they were rooted to the bottom of the Herald Women’s Premier League table after four rounds and no wins, the coach boldly predicted they would finish second and make the grand final.
And, on Saturday, that prediction came true as they downed defending champions Merewether 2-0 in the second leg of their two-legged semi-final to secure passage to this weekend’s decider.
They are now one win short of completing an amazing season turnaround from collecting the wooden spoon in their inaugural WPL season last year.
“I always believed once we found our way we could beat anyone,” Davis said.
“It it is a great feat to get into the grand final.”
They will meet Wallsend, who are also only in their second WPL season and finished second from the bottom last year, in the decider at Rockwell Automation Park, Weston on Sunday.
Davis praised the effort of his charges who were “ran off our feet in the first half but somehow re-energised in the second”.
Merewether dominated the first half at John St Oval but missed several clear chances on goal and the score remained nil-all at the break. The two sides had drawn 1-1 in the first leg of the semi-final at Adamstown Oval four days earlier.
The second half was just two minutes old when Jets W-League player Adriana Jones scored from close range.
Three minutes later Merewether had the chance to get back on level terms when they were awarded a spot kick but United captain Lori Depczynski put her shot wide of the goals
"I said to the girls we’re not the best team out there today but all we need to do is score off the counter attack, and that is what we did,” Davis said.
“I don’t know where they got it from but somehow they re-energised and fought back. It was a battle.”
Merewether coach Cassie Koppen said: “You can't miss a penalty and six one-on-ones and expect to win. I think we lost the game ourselves.”
At Adamstown Oval on Saturday, Wallsend trailed 1-0 at the break before going on a second-half goalscoring rampage to win 4-1 and finish the two-legged tie 7-3 over Rosebud.
Jets W-League player Jenna Kingsley scored a brace and Libby Copus-Brown and Keely Gawthrop both got on the score sheet.
Adamstown’s lone goal came early in the match when captain Clare Cummings scored from a free kick.
Wallsend coach Marc Hingston credited the “character shown” by his charges this season after being written off midseason.
“With the players we had I thought it was going to click on field straight away, but it has taken time,” Hingston said. “But I always knew when it did click it was going to be something special.
“I've coached for 10 years and this is the best culture I have seen at a club as well.”
