The student from St Patrick’s Primary School, Swansea was nominated for the Fred Hollows Humanity Award for his efforts by principal Peter Green.
The Humanity Award recognises year six students from across NSW who follow in Fred Hollows’ footsteps by showing care and compassion for others.
“Jye’s friend, Mick Craig, was recently diagnosed with brain cancer,” Mr Green said.
“Jye wanted to raise funds for brain cancer research by staging some exhibition games of touch football among our senior students.
“Funds were to be raised by passing buckets around among the students and through selling snacks.
“This event, which became known as ‘Kick It For Mick’, raised $680.60.”
It kickstarted a bigger fundraising campaign, which has now raised more than $21,000 for brain cancer research.
“He’s certainly a very inspiring young kid, he’s seen a need and just run with it,” Mr Green said.
All nominees will be recognised in a special presentation ceremony at NSW Parliament House on September 5.
