Eleven initiatives that will promote the city's economic development will receive a total of $100,000 under Council's economic development sponsorship program for 2016-17. The funding will contribute to projects with a direct expenditure of $1.25 million and support business growth and employment, encouraging innovation and creativity and developing the visitor economy. The Greater Hunter Makers festival will showcase the region's industrial and education capabilities in November with the help of a $15,000 grant from council. Newcastle's live music scene will get a shot in the arm through the The Tip Jar project, which will receive $11,000 in funding. The project will offer free music courses through TAFE, two nights of live music, a web-based platform for artists to upload their work in the hope of receiving money tips, and a grand finale live performance of the 10-most supported acts. Another sponsorship recipient is a creative agency that will produce hard copy fashion magazine Facon. It will provide employment and pathway opportunities for local creatives and play an integral role in a future fashion festival for Newcastle.
Applications are open for Council's Make your Place Grants of up to $2000. The current round closes Monday 5 September 2016.
