The Pivotal Cup was a knockout series contested by schools in the Hunter region at each of the Hunters’ Waratah Basketball League home games.
The Cup was run as part of the Newcastle Basketball Development Program and proved a huge success.
At each home game, four schools hit the court at Newcastle Basketball Stadium to contest a series of basketball activities.
Each team performed a series of four skills – passing, dribbling, shooting and footwork – and scored points at each station.
The four finalists were Mayfield East Public School, where Hunters men’s player Adam Melmeth teaches, St Therese’s Primary School, New Lambton and two teams from Hillsborough Public School.
The final was played on the Hunters’ last home game of the season last month and the win added a nice touch for Melmeth, who played his last match for Newcastle that night.
For their winning efforts, Mayfield East Public School won $5000 of sporting equipment courtesy of competition sponsor Pivotal Business Systems.
Hunters women’s captain and Newcastle Basketball development officer Sophie Kleeman headed up the program.
