THE first scout hall to be built in Newcastle in 70 years got the go ahead this month. The announcement was made at the 25th anniversary of the Maryland-Shortland Scout Troop celebration.

Following the induction of nine new scouts, two senior scouts, Joshua Ford and Joshua Griffiths, were presented with their Australian Scout Medallion (ASM). The medals were the first ever awarded to a Maryland-Shortland scout since the inception of the medal in 2003.
The boys were also congratulated on their individual efforts for organising a recent district scout and cub camp and a coastal walk of more than 30kms.
NSW Scouts regional commissioner for Hunter and coastal Steve Fernie announced funding had been approved for the commencement of the construction of a hall on land already owned by the scout group on the corner of Minmi Road and Maryland Drive.
The announcement comes after many years of dedicated planning and fundraising by the troop for a purpose-built hall.
The Maryland-Shortland Scout Troop includes both girls and boys aged six to 18 years in joey, cub, scout, and venturer sections.
They are led by passionate men and woman who are dedicated to providing a safe but challenging environment to inspire youth to develop “confidence, resilience and leadership skills” in a supportive environment of fun and friendship.
