Champion community organisation CityServe, Newcastle City Council and the Port of Newcastle are teaming up again to carry out maintenance and repairs to public assets throughout September and October.
CityServe brings government, business and community groups together to spruce up public facilities, such as ocean baths and park play equipment, revegetate denuded areas as well as help the needy blitz projects around their homes.
Last year it provided $280,000 worth of complimentary labour when around 750 volunteers completed 24 separate projects prepared and overseen by our building trades and bushland services teams.
I joined CityServe Chairman Rick Prosser and Lake Macquarie Mayor Jodie Harrison to announce this year's CityServe projects last week.
We are so very grateful to continue the fantastic partnership we have built with CityServe over the past four years.
The total value of the work delivered last year after the preparations by council staff and contractors was around $550,000.
Newcastle has benefited enormously from the work of CityServe volunteers and a number of great projects are planned again this year.
These include painting at Merewether Ocean Baths pavilion, equipment maintenance in Wallsend parks and painting and cleaning of the facilities at Waratah Oval.
Public facilities from the coast to the western corridor will be targeted, with teams cleaning, repairing and painting picnic sets and seats, fences and pavilions.
