University became the first Newcastle team to join the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League Ladies League Tag competition this year.
They finished second on the ladder then went down 20-0 to Umina in the championship decider, held on September 10 at Harker Oval.
League tag is played under rugby league rules but players grab a tag rather than tackle their opponents.
It is played on a full field with 11 players per side.
The women’s competition comprised the five teams of Umina, University, Dora Creek, Tea Gardens and Morisset and Ward hoped the league would expand next year. Matches were all played prior to NHRL men’s games.
“It was a good season for the girls to experience the game,” Ward said. “Most had never played before, only myself and another girl.
“We were pretty proud of making the final, especially in the club’s first year ever.”
Ward, who has a strong touch background, played two league tag seasons in the Hunter Valley before joining University for their maiden season.
They lost just one match on the way to securing a grand final berth.
