Salter, also known as Merewether Fats, died unexpectedly on September 14 while travelling with his wife, Jennifer, and his young daughter.
An old friend Bill Olsen said the acclaimed musician would be deeply missed within the Newcastle music community.
“With every fibre in his body he was a blues-man,” Mr Olsen said.
“Mark was unique in that he didn’t just hear music, he felt music.
“He was an exquisite player.”
He leaves behind two daughters, Claire and Naomi.
