In a novel exercise in marketing and fundraising, fans of the band can come into the studio and lay down some vocal tracks on the full length album Last Romantics, which is currently in production.
For a pledge of $100 fans can go into the studio and sing backing vocals as well as receive a digital copy of the upcoming album. For the same amount you can spend a day hanging out with Capeside in studio, or be in one of the film clips. And $600 will see the band covering your favourite song.
Capeside has an array of merchandise also available. The money raised will fund the new album.
The band has been together about three years. They released an EP Phoenix in 2013 and a full length album Atlantis in 2014 as a three piece.
However, after the release of Atlantis the band decided it wanted to more closely match its live sound with the recording. They were joined by Mitch Grob on bass, which allowed Simon McNamara to switch to lead guitar. Rhys Zacher is on drums and Matt Conaghan is on vocals and guitar.
“We were writing more guitar and we didn’t want a thin sound, what we do on the album we wanted to be able to reproduce live,” Conaghan said.
“We just needed that extra lead guitar sound.”
Zacher also runs Spinlight Studio, at Valentine, and has produced all the band’s recordings. He is at the helm of Last Romantics.
“It’s probably a lot more rock this time,” Conaghan said. “Phoenix was more acoustic, Atlantis was probably a bit more mellow.
“On this album we had about 25 songs to choose from, we narrowed it down to 11. We didn’t want all the songs to sound the same from front to back on the album, so there is a good mix of songs on there.”
The band cites ‘90s and ‘00s punk as a big influence, along with bands like Dashboard Confessional, City and Colour and Blink 182.
“They are the bands we grew up on and it comes through on the influences,” Conaghan.
“We don’t like to stick to one style. As long as we like a song that’s all that matters.
“Each song has its own personality, but if there was an overarching theme for this album, I guess it would be relationships.
“A little bit of heartbreak on there.”
The band expects to finish the album by the end of the year, with a release soon after.
