While I can appreciate it is a big few weeks for the students, it is important to remember there is life after the HSC and that the adventure is only just beginning. This is a sentiment that I’ve heard over recent weeks at many Year 12 presentations. Last week, I was privileged to attend a presentation assembly at Whitebridge High School and it was here that I met an inspirational young woman – outgoing school captain Anna.
What I learned from Anna is that young people are passionate about their future. Young people are the engine in the fight against inequality and for human rights and, as such, all levels of government should listen to, learn from, and work with them to create a more equitable future. I hope more students in Lake Macquarie feel empowered as much as Anna to get involved in issues that affect them.
Students play a crucial role in the Lake Macquarie community and their input is invaluable to Council. The Lake Macquarie Youth Advisory Council is just one avenue that young people can use to provide feedback to Council. Membership to the Youth Advisory Council is open to people living in Lake Macquarie who are aged 12 to 24. More information: lakemac.com.au
