FOR Newcastle band Yours Alone every time they play it’s a career “highlight”. The four piece punk outfit formed from the remnants of other bands about 18 months ago and debuted at Groovin the Moo in 2015.

“We won a Triple J competition before we had even played a show, we had released a song,” guitarist Sean Degan said.
It was their second time on stage when they performed on the main stage to an audience of about 500.
“We were thrown on stage so unprepared but had a ball,” Degan said.
“It was a great experience. I have been playing music since I was 15, I am now 30, and it was my first experience of rock stardom.”
The band said supporting Everclear at the Small Ballroom was another highlight. However, Degan said anytime the band got to play it was a highlight for them.
The band will support US band Bayside on November 10 at The Cambridge Hotel.
“I absolutely love them and their music and to get to actually open for one of my favourite bands is just a really big thing,” Degan said.
Bass player Alex McWhirter said the band was the most “serious” he had been in.
“We stick to rehearsal routines, other bands I have been in rehearse sporadically, just before a gig,” he said.
“Yours Alone actually, even if there are no gigs booked, will rehearse.”
The line-up sees Degan and McWhirter joined by Jake Hewish on guitar and Levi Dallen on drums. They are all involved in song writing.
“It basically starts in Jake’s head in Jake’s room,” Degan said.
“He will come up with the gist of the idea.”
The band demos ideas which they bring to rehearsals.
“It’s very collaborative … The dynamic in the band is great, we aren’t afraid to tell each other something is crap,” Degan said.
“We are very critical of each other, but not in a bad way, it’s constructive.
“In the rehearsal studio it’s usually just a lot of fun, a lot of laughs.”
The band has played extensively in Newcastle, and also had shows in Sydney.
“I think we have played most of the venues bar Civic Theatre and the Entertainment Centre,” Degan.
The band draws on 90’s US punk influences such as NoFX and a more melodic Propagandhi. The vocals move back and forth between band members.
“Influences range from early Blink182 to bands like Taking Back Sunday,” Degan said.
The band has released four singles, all recorded at Spinlight Studio with Rhys Zacher.
Next gig: The Cambridge, November 10
