Professor Manohar Garg, Doctor Sham Acharya and Rohith Thota are examining the use of curcumin and omega-3 fats in lowering the risk.
They want to recruit 80 people aged between 40 and 75 years with type 2 diabetes to take part in a six-week study, which requires taking two capsules morning and night.
“People with type 2 diabetes have two to four times higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease,” Mr Thota said.
