Leading the charge were Redhead pair Daniel Collins and Isak Costello, who compete in the open men’s division.
The opening round of the Newcastle Permanent Series at Birubi on October 15 was the first selection carnival for the Hunter team which will compete at the NSW Interbranch titles on the Central Coast in December.
Hunter selector Craig Coates said there were several age groups shaping up to be strong for Hunter on the state stage, including the open men.
Competitors get another chance to state cases for inclusion at the second round of the Newcastle Permanent Series at Blacksmiths on November 6.
Meanwhile, Collins and Costello had impact in the first round of the Summer of Surf Series held at Alexandra Headland last weekend.
Collins won the men’s run-swim-run. Costello placed sixth in the men’s board race and was 10th in the open ironman race.
Lily Costello was eighth in the women’s board race at Alexandra Headland.
The next round is a Torquay in Victoria then round three is at Fingal on November 26 and 27.
