He has been involved in the surf-lifesaving movement as a volunteer for over 25 years, worked as a professional lifeguard and has been in the NSW Fire and Rescue service for the past two decades.
Now the former professional triathlete wants to help save lives through a series of fun and engaging children's books which also promote beach safety.
Conrick launched his first book on Thursday and it was met with plenty of enthusiasm from children from Redhead Community Preschool.
“I wanted to write a story that was entertaining and engaging for young children but one that would leave them able to recall a subtle safety message,” Conrick said.
“Like swim between the flags, simple things kids are going to hopefully retain and be safe at the beach.”
The Redhead surf-lifesaver has always had an interest in creative writing and started a communications degree nearly two decades ago but withdrew to get a job with the fire brigade.
Since having his own family, he has started writing again.
“We read to our kids a bit and I always thought it would be good to write something beach-related because I'd worked as a professional lifesaver and as a volunteer lifesaver for over 25 years,” he said. “I also wanted to create something that was authentic.”
The result is At the Beach with Lizzie and Luke, which Conrick hopes will be the first in a 10-book series.
“I didn’t write the book with the intention to make money,” he said. “If it saves a kid's life then that will be enough. There are still so many cases of tragedies on our beaches in Australia."
The book has the support of Surf Lifesaving Australia and Hunter branch chief executive officer Rhonda Scruton thought it was “a great initiative”.
“If we can get young people to understand that being a lifesaver is a great community service then that is great,” Ms Scruton said.
“Hopefully they will read the books and go home to their parents saying they want to join nippers, and even if they don’t, they will hopefully learn things that save lives in the surf.”
