Tourism Australia’s aquatic and coastal ambassador Brad Farmer has written about the country’s coast for three decades and ranked its 11,761 beaches for his 2012 book 101 Best Australian Beaches.
Mr Farmer’s updated top 20 puts Cossies Beach in the Cocos Keeling Islands at the top and Merewether at number 13.
Mr Farmer said it was clean, safe, not congested, had ample parking, was free from visual and noise pollution, had good amenities and a cafe scene and had “genuine engagement with the locals”.
The top 101 also includes Seal Rocks, Bennetts Beach at Hawks Nest, Catherine Hill Bay and Avoca.
