I am notoriously late and, I don’t know about you, but I have abandoned going to the gym many times because I was running late and knew I would not make the start time.
I also have to leave a lot of classes early so I slot in with the range of other commitments our family has.
So, I was curious to find out more about the convenience 12RND Fitness at The Junction offered.
I had walked past it several times, in The Junction shopping centre, and seen a sign out the front telling me, ‘Next round starts in 2 minutes’ and wondered what it was actually all about.
On Saturday I went along to find out.
As I understood it, I could just turn up any time in opening hours and start my 12 rounds.
Each round goes for three minutes.
When I walked into the gym there were 12 rounds set up and a few people already in action.
Trainers Jake Farrell and Andrew Slee were moving around the gym making sure everyone was working hard and also putting those on boxing stations through their paces.
Another feature of 12RND Fitness is the My Zone component, where participants can wear a heart rate monitor and trainers can track how hard they are working.
Andrew later told me this helps him push clients harder and keep them motivated to achieving their work-out goals.
“It’s high intensity interval training for all levels,” Andrew said when I asked him to describe the type of sessions 12RND Fitness ran.
“If you’re looking to just get fitter and to lose weight and get stronger then it’s going to do all of those things for you, but in a convenient and time efficient way.”
Each round comprises two exercises and boxing features in around 25 per cent of each 12-round session.
Trainers are on hand to help explain each exercise as you move around the stations and by the end you have had a total body workout.
The 12RND Fitness chain only started trading in January but is already proving popular across the country.
Australian boxer Danny Green is a 12RND Fitness ambassador and helped conceptualise the gyms.
The workouts are created around the format of a 12-round boxing contest and combine boxing skills and drills with functional strength and sports-based cardiovascular exercises.
A 12-round session completes a workout but Andrew said some people start with just a few rounds then work their way up to longer sessions.
“The sessions are for all levels and we can modify everything,” Andrew said.
“But you’ll never get bored in here and you’ll never be late.”
Those last two points had resonance with me and, overall, I really enjoyed all it had to offer.
