It was close but Toronto High School’s Luke Young held on for victory in the under-16 boys’ 800-metre final on Sunday to secure his second gold medal of the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships in Canberra.

Young set a new meet record on Saturday in winning the under-16 boys’ 1500m final in a time of in time of three minutes and 55.02 seconds.
He backed up the effort on Sunday for a narrow win in the 800m. Young crossed the finish line first in 1:54.72 seconds.
Western Australia’s Luke Shaw was second in 1:54.76 and Canberra’s Matthew McGrory third in 1:54.79.
Young’s was one of several medal-winning efforts from Hunter athletes in the nation’s capital.
Merewether High School’s Milly Stephenson formed part of the victorious NSW team in the under-14 girls’ 4 x 100m relay.
Stephenson combined with Tiahna Skleton, from Callaghan College, Wallsend, and Alice Dixon and Nathalie Avery for the win.
Skelton was fourth in the under-14 girls long jump.
Stephenson was also third in the under-14 girls' 100m final.
Emily Whelan, of St Pius X High School, Adamstown, went into the national meet as the New South Wales high jump schools champion for her age.
But she had to settle for the silver medal at the Australian titles as Paige Wilson (NSW) won the under-18 girls’ high jump with a clearance of 1.84 metres.
Whelan’s jump of 1.77m was a qualifying mark for the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games.
