This year’s Games will be held in Kaunas, Lithuania, in July.
A spokesperson for Lake Macquarie City Council said 12 athletes had been confirmed – in swimming (7), athletics (4) and sailing (1).
“Nominations have been extended as openings still exist for girl and boy athletes, girl swimmers, a sailing athlete, and players for 3-on-3 basketball,” the spokesperson said.
The athletes selected so far could not be named until the entire squad was finalised, they said.
The council will host an information session for confirmed and interested athletes in the committee room at Lake Macquarie City Council on Tuesday, January 31, at 4.30pm.
Athletes who are interested but have not yet nominated are encouraged to attend.
They will receive information on things such as competition, uniform, travel, accommodation, fundraising and costs and be able to ask questions of the organisers.
Lake Macquarie has been a regular participant in the Games since 2008, and became the first Australian city to host the event in 2014.
The Lake Macquarie International Children’s Games attracted 1300 athletes from around the world.
The Hunter Academy of Sport will manage the Lake Macquarie team to Lithuania, with athletes to be supervised by experienced coaches and managers.
Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser will accompany the team to Kaunas.
“The International Children’s Games is a wonderful event that emphasises participation and cultural exchange,” Cr Fraser said.
“It is a unique opportunity for young athletes to make new friends and, through their shared love for sport, develop an understanding of and respect for people from other cultures.”
Academy chief executive officer, Brett O’Farrell, said the Games offered a rare opportunity.
“The Children’s Games offer emerging young athletes a valuable opportunity to gain experience competing at international level,” he said.
“The standard of competition is high and the scale of the event inspires athletes to put in their best performances. They love the experience of representing their city.”
