Students from the Hunter Tennis Academy visited the Brisbane International last week, with young Luka Neyland meeting French Open champion Garbine Muguruza, who beat Serena Williams 7-5 6-4 in the final at Roland Garros.
Rising star Grigor Dimitrov also made an impression, according to local coach Gary Brenton.
“Both Garbine and Grigor were excellent; really accommodating,” he said.
“That [attitude] means a lot to a player like Luka.”
A talented quartet from the region then ventured to the Fast4 exhibition in Sydney on Monday.
“They not only played a Hotshot game on the roof, they met Aussie duo Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic, thanks to Tennis Australia,” Brenton said.
“The children found them really good.
“And, Nick and Bernard were happy to give their time to the kids.”
Now, Brenton is heading south again on Friday.
“I’m taking six under-9s down to the Sydney International for a special Red Ball challenge organised by Tennis Australia,” he said.
“The kids will hit on Ken Rosewall Arena before the main match.
“They’ll get to meet the players behind back stage, too.”
