SWANSEA MP Yasmin Catley has waded into the debate on the future of the Pelican boat ramp, declaring she sees “no reason” why the beach can’t stay.
Furious beach-lovers lit the fuse on the debate when they slammed a state government recommendation that a new boat ramp be built on Pelican’s much-loved swimming spot.
Ms Catley said she had heard the cries of the community.
“I see no reason why the ramp and beach can’t coexist,” the Labor MP said.
In a letter to the editor, Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said more than 800 people had made a submission on the state government’s proposal in just one week.
“Like other councillors, I share the concerns of many in the community about the potential loss of this public recreational area and prefer it remain undisturbed,” she said in the letter.
Fellow councillor John Gilbert has called the plan “outrageous” and “stupid”.
