But, hundreds want to help.
The Muswellbrook man gave money to a handyman to set up a carport but, after taking the funds, he never completed the work.
Since hearing of his disappointment, the community has rallied behind their fellow resident, determined to raise enough for the shed.
Local mother Kellie Cavanagh set up a Facebook page – A Helping Hand for Pete.
Within a few hours, it had gathered hundreds of page likes.
She is currently organising a fundraising family day at Muswellbrook Golf Club, and all are invited to attend.
Mrs Cavanagh uses the page to update contributors on fundraising totals, and how they can help.
“The cost of the carport is $1700 and is cut and waiting at Muswellbrook Steel Supplies for payment,” she said.
“Raising the money to pay this invoice is goal number one.”
While planning for the event, on February 12, is in the early stages, Mrs Cavanagh organised entertainment, raffles and games.
Expressions School of Dance, and Muswellbrook band Forever Falling will be among those performing; and The Chop Shop Butchery will donate the meat for a sausage sizzle.
Mrs Cavanagh said Muswellbrook was known for its community support when people were in need, and she had already had an outstanding response.
“Muswellbrook Steel Supplies employees made a huge donation towards Pete, and Muswellbrook Hotel did as well," she said.
“People are just donating anywhere from $5 to $50.”
Mr Weiss, who moved to town from Sydney last year, said he was blown away by support from Muswellbrook residents, helping him as if he had been here his whole life.
“It’s beyond my comprehension – everyone is so marvelous,” he said.
“They don’t know me from a bar of soap.
“We are just a completely new identity in town.”
The grateful senior said he hoped there would be something else happening in the future which he could contribute to.
