POLICE said initial investigations suggest the motorbike attempted to overtake a truck when it collided with the ute travelling in the opposite direction.
The rider, a 44-year-old man, died at the scene.
The 61-year-old man driving the Toyota Hilux ute was taken to John Hunter Hospital with leg injuries.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.

A MOTORBIKE rider has died and another is injured after a crash on The Bucketts Way near Stroud.
Emergency services converged on the scene shortly after 5.30pm following reports of a collision between a motorbike and a utility.
The male motorbike rider died at the scene, police confirmed.
A man driving the utility was taken to John Hunter Hospital with leg injuries.
The Bucketts Way north of Stroud remained closed at 7.30pm.
Meanwhile, a truck rolled on Thunderbolts Way at Bretti, north of Gloucester, trapping its driver.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter responded to the accident.
