THE top performers in last year’s Newcastle Permanent Primary Schools Mathematics Competition have enjoyed a weekend camp at Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre on the shores of Lake Macquarie.

The students, who took out the top 100 places among more than 18,000 students in last year’s 36th annual competition, were brought together for a two day intensive maths camp.
It involved a series of workshops that tested their prowess in geometry, broken numbers and triangular numbers in a fun, challenging environment.
Among the top students was Lachlan Miller, of Rathmines Public School.
It wasn’t all work for the students who also made good use of Myuna Bay’s recreational and adventure activities, facilitated by volunteer teachers and education support staff.
Almost 340 schools from the Hunter, Lake Macquarie, Central Coast, Central West, New England, North Coast and Northern Rivers participated in last year’s competition.
It challenged the students’ maths mettle and problem solving skills in a 35-question exam – all without the use of a calculator or other electronic aids.
The Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition is the largest of its kind in Australia and is open to all primary school students in year 5 and 6.
Awards are provided to the winners in each region.
Registrations for this year’s competition close on Friday, May 12.
